SEO Tip Of The Day – Tracking Email Opens With Google Analytics

If you have a Google Analytics account set up for your website, it can also be used to track the opens of an email.

For Event Tracking you need to embed an image tag within the HTML of your email (GA’s javascript code do not work in email clients). Of course this image will be invisible.

The URL of the image contains all the information necessary for Google Analytics to understand what account you’re using.

How to embed:

<head>
    <body>
        Content Here
        <img src="http://www.google-analytics.com/collect?v=1&amp;tid=UA-32031717-1&amp;cid=12345678&amp;t=event&amp;ec=email&amp;ea=open&amp;el=open_email&amp;cs=newsletter&amp;cm=email&amp;cn=YourCampaign Name">
    </body>
</head>
</html>

Google Analytics dashboard will show response as soon as email is opened by the receiver.

So log into Google Analytics and open up your Real Time reports to see people opening your emails in real time. Can I get a “woop-woop?”
